(about making Second Nature)
Improvisation and collaboration are two important foundational components in manifesting this collection of songs. The concept was sparked when Nate called from Chicago and told me he was coming down and that he wanted me to record him improving and to see what I'd do with/add to it... That's essentially what happened... Improv is like catching a wave. You have to get on top of it, but you can not control when, or how it comes, where it will break... I did my best to engage that process with integrity and be led by the waves. Nate and Jojo took it to the next level, bringing new life and flavor to the table. One of the theme's that began to emerge as the arrangements took shape was a much more broad reflection of my own musical influences than in past Lullabies offerings. The most surprising being hiphop. It's just a subtle flavor, but it was a very natural and organic thing.

A cornerstone ethic for writing Lullabies material has always been to "find" the song that is there, rather than put it there. I view this type of composition as translation, as opposed to fabrication. My approach to that concept is deeply rooted in spontaneity and improvisation because it requires that you operate from instinct and be in the moment. In a sense, forfeiting control, and by doing so allowing the heart the opportunity to speak louder than the mind. As a result, I believe that spontaneity has the power to draw out (an artist’s) essence…while at the same time makes room for something inspired and “beyond us” to take place.

about

Lullabies Phoenix, Arizona

Never before had my heart been so greatly transformed than in the instant I first saw and heard my first child. The profound experience of becoming a father gave me a platform to create from a pure place where judgment and pretense were absent.
